Not your average barbershop.
Underneath 186 Deansgate, Manchester lay a forgotten about space with a rich criminal history. Once the ex criminal processing offices, the basement space was a rough canvas which NoChintz were tasked with creating a unique new concept for the Manchester scene.
A city centre barbershop with a hidden secret. Two destinations at one address: a premium barber shop and a relaxed bar / venue. The building itself inspired the the identity; the shaded criminal history is playfully embraced in the space and the brand as we transformed the rouge space into a refined character.
Entering off the busy Deansgate you are greeted by a contemporary and refined barbershop. There is more to this barbershop than meets the eye. Twists and quirks reveal themselves as you fall deeper into the One Eight Six.
Smoked oak panelling and arched mirrors set the scene for modern day, unisex barbering. Bespoke lighting installation features the brand scissor motif and floor to ceiling mirror lead you down the metal caged stairway. The mirrored wall houses a hidden doorway to the live music club which is the alter ego of the business.
Metallics, concretes and timbers collide in this eclectic venue to deliver a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere which is maintained from early mornings to late nights. Bespoke lighting installations create an iconic statement in the space. Representing the energy and free spirit of the venue. Nothing is as it seems in the space, optical illusion tiled floors, mirrored ceilings and catwalk tables showcase the brands playful side.
NoChintz commissioned local illustrators to create original artworks which are immersive and evoke madness as you travel to the bathrooms. Once in the bathroom you find an entirely mirrored room, perfect for those selfie moments. In the space and photography pieces of local Mancunian homeless illuminate the space and add a real edge.
The identity for One Eight Six represents the split personality of the venue; on one side something to discover, the other straight up. Separated by a sharp cut in homage to the clean cut services on offer in the barbershop.
NoChintz worked with the team at One Eight Six to create social media content, marketing material, menus, website and identity for the house band ‘The Sublime Seven’. Also designing and commissioning band uniforms which feature the logo.
